Description
Analyzing and designing reliable and fast wireless networks requires an understanding of the theory supporting these systems and the engineering complexities of their implementation. This volume describes the underlying principles and major applications of high-speed wireless technologies, with emphasis on ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless systems, 3G long term evolution, and 4G mobile networks. Key topics such as cross-layer optimization are discussed in detail and various forms of UWB are covered. Recent research developments are described before identifying the scope and direction for future research. Covering the latest technologies in the area, this book will be a valuable resource for graduate students of electrical and computer engineering as well as practitioners in the wireless communications industry.

I have assigned a weak rating to this book as it appears to actually be largely a collection of the author's research papers with the addition of an introductory chapter and a few other additions. Though not a problem for this reviewer, many readers will not find easy many pages devoted to mathematical line-by-line derivations. In fact, even readers with the mathematical background would be better off going to the original research publications (from the IEEE Transactions Xplore database) and locating the papers there. Many of the chapters end with words to the effect "this is novel" or "that is novel", whereas what many people look for in a book is consolidated knowledge. I also find it highly unlikely (as the book's back cover and first page claims) that the book will be "an invaluable resource for graduate students of .... computer engineering", as there is scarcely a word about computers. In fact, even one of its other claimed audiences "practitioners in the wireless communications industry" will find little in their day-to-day lives that is helpful to them in this book. As such, the preface at least should be categorized under the heading of 'fiction'.
